What’s in the rinse?

An added sugar alcohol

Xylitol is studied as an additive to saline. It is not an antibiotic. Products may be isotonic or hypertonic.

When to compare it & what to watch for

Some small studies were positive, but added benefit is uncertain. An ENT can discuss its relevance to diagnosed persistent disease or postoperative care. Avoid improvised mixtures and incompatible devices.

A 2026 critical appraisal found no robust basis for routinely adding xylitol. A small spray is not equivalent to the larger rinses studied.
